Drawing Comfort Tip #1 - Use a "Do-Over"

We've all had those moments when a conversation starts to go off track.

Emotions take over and before you know it, you're both frustrated.

Instead of carrying on down the same path, try using a simple phrase:

"Let's have a do-over."

A do-over is exactly what it sounds like.

It gives everyone permission to pause, take a breath and start again.

Why it works

Children are still learning how to manage big emotions. A do-over teaches them that making mistakes is part of learning and that relationships can recover after difficult moments.

It also models an important life skill - that it's okay to recognise when something isn't working and choose a different way forward.

How to use it

Keep it calm and light.

You might say:

  • "Let's have a do-over."

  • "Can we try saying that again?"

  • "Let's rewind and start from the beginning."

You don't need to revisit who was right or wrong first. Simply restart the conversation with a calmer tone.

Give it a try

The next time a conversation starts heading in the wrong direction, see if a do-over helps everyone reset before things escalate.

Remember...

You don't have to be a perfect parent.

Children learn just as much from seeing us repair mistakes as they do from seeing us get things right the first time.
