When emotions are running high, it's easy to jump straight into correcting your child's behaviour.

"Stop shouting."

"Calm down."

"You know better than that."

We often want to fix the behaviour as quickly as possible.

Instead, remember: Connection before correction. Help your child feel understood before helping them understand.

Why it works

When children are overwhelmed by big emotions, the thinking part of their brain goes offline.

By connecting with your child first, you help them feel safe, calm their nervous system and become more able to listen and learn.

Connection isn't about letting poor behaviour slide. It's about creating the best opportunity for your child to hear what you're trying to teach them.

How to use it

Start by acknowledging how your child might be feeling.

You could say:

"I can see you're really upset."

"That looked really frustrating."

Once your child is calmer, you can then talk about what happened and what they could do differently next time.

Give it a try

The next time your child is struggling with big emotions, pause before correcting them.

Connect first, then guide them towards a better choice when they're ready to listen.

Remember...

Children don't learn best when they feel criticised. They learn best when they feel safe, understood and supported.

Connection first. Correction second.
