A Gentle Way for Children to Explore Their Feelings

As parents, we naturally want to fix things when our child is upset. We ask questions, offer reassurance and encourage them to talk.

But what if they can't find the words?

Children often communicate through play long before they can explain how they feel. Their worries, fears, hopes and experiences are often expressed in the way they play rather than in what they say.

That's why Sand Play can be such a powerful form of child emotional support.

What is Sand Play?

Sand Play is a gentle, child-led therapeutic approach that gives children a safe space to express thoughts and feelings using miniature figures, objects and a tray of sand.

Rather than asking children to talk about difficult experiences, Sand Play allows them to create small worlds that reflect what's happening in their inner world.

A child might choose animals, people, vehicles, trees, buildings or fantasy figures. Every choice has meaning for them, even if they don't fully understand it themselves.

There is no pressure to explain their play or answer difficult questions. Instead, they are given the time, space and acceptance they need to work through emotions in a way that feels natural.

For many children, play is their language.

Why Sand Helps

There's something incredibly calming about sand.

The simple act of running it through your fingers, creating shapes or building scenes can help children feel grounded and settled. The sensory nature of sand encourages relaxation, making it easier for children to explore emotions that may otherwise feel overwhelming.

Because children are focused on creating rather than talking, they often feel safer expressing themselves. Difficult feelings that haven't been processed yet can emerge naturally through their play.

This process can help children:

  • Feel calmer and more regulated

  • Build emotional resilience

  • Develop confidence

  • Process difficult experiences

  • Reduce anxiety

  • Improve concentration

  • Feel more secure and understood

More Than Just Playing in Sand

Although Sand Play may look like simple play from the outside, there is much more happening beneath the surface.

Children are making sense of experiences, exploring relationships, expressing emotions and discovering new ways of coping - all without needing to find the perfect words.

At Drawing Comfort, I also believe that emotional wellbeing doesn't stop when the session ends. Alongside each Sand Play session, I share practical wellbeing activities and emotional regulation strategies that children can use between sessions.

Parents receive these ideas too, so you can continue supporting your child at home with simple techniques that fit naturally into everyday life. Whether it's calming breathing exercises, movement activities, mindfulness, grounding techniques or ways to manage worries, these small strategies help reinforce the emotional skills your child is developing during their Sand Play sessions.

Who Can Benefit?

Sand Play can support many children, particularly those who find it difficult to talk about their feelings.

It may be helpful for children who are:

  • Struggling with friendships

  • Experiencing low confidence

  • Adjusting to change

  • Living with family conflict

  • Processing trauma or difficult experiences
